Cairo
University
hospitals are the oldest and greatest teaching and curative hospitals in
Egypt
and the
Middle East
. They provide the world with the most skilful physicians. They comprise a set of
teaching and curative hospitals in all medical branches.
These hospitals commenced in 1837 with
Kasr Al Aini Hospital as a curative hospital for all medical specializations, including
surgery, internal, ophthalmology, dermatology, venereology, medicine. This was the
origin of Faculty of Medicine.
Al Kasr Al Aini proceeded its elevated
message under all circumstances. Its physicians have been keen on keeping the prestigious
image of
Egypt
all over the world. On
March, 17, 1977
, it was decided to demolish the hospital in order to construct a new one in terms
of structure and facilities. This new hospital was built on the same area occupied
by Al Kasr Al Aini which could occupy 1200 beds. The new hospital was partially
inaugurated in 1955 to receive patients.
Cairo University
hospitals comprise the following curative
and teaching units:
1- Al Manial
University Hospital
:
It has 1794 beds distributed over its
different sections. It is administratively divided into three units:
A) Al Manial Al Bahari Hospital:
It supervises surgery departments no.
6, 28, 29 and 30; urinary passages department; internal medicine departments no.
9,19 and 31, and osteology departments no. 7 and 20. It also includes accident reception
and central radiology.
B) Al Manial Al Kibli Hospital:
It supervises surgery departments no.
5, 25 and 27; cardiac and chest surgery department no.24; cerebrum and neurology
surgery department no. 26; cardiac and eye disease departments no. 12, 14 and 16;
nero disease department no. 4 and 15; and psychiatric diseases department. It also
comprises other departments of chest, internal medicine, gynecology, ENT, and psychiatric
diseases.
C) Operations Unit:
It includes operation theatres, which
serve both Al Manial Al Bahari and Al Manial Al Kibli hospitals units. It consists
of 16 equipped operation theatres.
2- Gynecology Diseases and
Delivery Hospital
:
It is one of
Cairo University
hospitals. It comprises five departments for curing gynecology diseases and delivery.
It also has 297 beds and two operation theatres, as well as two departments for
surgery and laboratories in neonatals unit.
3- Internal Medicine Diseases Hospital:
It is a special hospital, majoring
in treatment of internal diseases. It consists of seven floors, serving curative
and teaching purposes.
It has 306 beds, as well as radiology
devices and laboratories.
4- New
University Child Hospital
:
This hospital is equipped with the
state – of – the – art equipment. It was set in motion in 1983 with 185 beds, four
operation threatres radiology devices and specialized laboratories. This hospital
duly provides medical service for Egyptian and Arab children. It occupies an advanced
rank in the field of pediatrics and child – related surgery.
5- Out – Patient Clinic:
Out – patient clinic comprises varied
clinics for various branches of medicine. It accommodates diagnostic and curative
services for its frequenters. Besides, it provides patients with appropriate medication.
This clinic is also considered an independent administrative unit in accordance
with decentralization system adopted by universities.
6- New Kasr Al-Aini Teaching Hospital:
The New Kasr Al-Aini Teaching Hospital
is composed of 12 floors with 1200 beds. The eighth and ninth floors are devoted
to paid treatment. It is deemed a leap
in the world of medicine as it was provided with the latest devices and medical
equipment in the world. It is also considered one of the prominent achievements
of
Cairo University
. The hospital includes 8 departments for general internal medicine; 6 departments
for specialized surgeries; 5 departments for 8 general internal surgeries; assisting
medical units (intensive care – blood bank – endoscopes); central laboratories;
diagnostic rays department; and surgical operations unit.
It is to be mentioned that the surgical
operations unit is composed of 18 operation theatres, equipped with all required
services, including rooms for sterilization, anesthesia and recovery. It is also
equipped with all types of surgical microscopes; laser devices and diagnostic rays,
which can be recorded on video tapes.
As for lift services, there are 27
electrical lifts in the hospital, serving both patients and visitors. They are also
used for carrying food and tools, thus facilitating the movement of employees in
the hospital.
